Chargers report: Ryan Mathews should benefit from offensive changes

The Chargers are expected to return from their open week with a revised approach to their offense. What that will exactly look like is anyone's guess.
But it's logical to suspect running back Ryan Mathews will stand to benefit.
Coach Norv Turner this week called solving the team's turnover issue his “main focus” during the off week, even if that means taking a more conservative approach with his offensive play calling to eliminate high-risk plays.

The sentiment comes on the heels of Mathews' improved ball security and arguably quarterback Philip Rivers' worst game in which he turned the ball over a career-high six times in the team’s meltdown loss to the Broncos.
After missing the first two games with a broken collarbone, Mathews fumbled in his season debut on his eighth touch. He hasn't fumbled in his 67 touches since.
Mathews’ workload has increased from 15 touches to 16 to 18 to 26.
In Monday’s game, he was a starter, after coming off the bench behind Jackie Battle the previous two games, and had career-high 15 first half carries.
The Chargers, while still working in Ronnie Brown and occasionally Battle, have made a concerted effort to get Mathews the ball. And as long as he continues to reward their confidence by protecting it, that will likely continue.
MAKING PROGRESS: Chargers kicker Nate Kaeding said this week he is coming off a strong 7-10 days of rehab. Kaeding is working back from a groin strain in his kicking leg and has missed the past three games. He is hopeful, based on his rate of progress, that he can play against the Cleveland Browns when the Chargers resume play in Week 8.
